I turn in confusion.

Is someone addressing me?

My eyes land on an old woman, who is glaring at me from within the stocks. The wood holds her bent double, and her hands are clamped at either side. She is filthy. Maggots run over her hair, which hangs over her face in grey strings. The boards around her are splattered with rotten eggs and old tomatoes. She twists her stained face and leers up at me.

“Come to laugh, have ye?” she says. She spits. “Get in line. A pox on the whole kingdom, I say.”
